High school coach who was fired for praying with players wins $1.7 million settlement

The Bremerton School District in Washington State unanimously opted to accept an award, leading to former coach Joseph Kennedy receiving a substantial settlement of $1,775,000.

Kennedy has been granted permission to rejoin Bremerton High School in 2023, taking on the role of an assistant football coach.

In addition to his reinstatement, Kennedy will also receive a stipend of $5,304 for his contributions during the 2023 football season, as stated by the district.

Alyson Rotter, the school board president, expressed the community’s eagerness to move past the nearly eight-year-long legal dispute, emphasizing their dedication to providing students with the best education possible.

Despite his termination from the organization, Kennedy received two significant pieces of news. Firstly, he was granted the agreed-upon compensation. Secondly, he found vindication when the Supreme Court ruled in his favor with a 6-3 vote in June.

The court affirmed his constitutional right to kneel alongside student athletes and offer prayers on the field following games, marking a pivotal moment of validation for Kennedy.
