Granddaughter found her grandparents’ wedding gift cheap

Jen and her husband, a septuagenarian couple, eagerly anticipated attending their youngest granddaughter Eloise’s wedding. With four other grandchildren already wed, they looked forward to celebrating this special occasion. Unbeknownst to most but a tradition among their grandchildren who had married in preceding years, the couple adhered to the custom of selecting the least expensive item from the registry. They prepared a check for $40,000, ready to present it to Eloise on her big day.

However, Eloise was unaware of this familial tradition. Upon discovering that her grandparents had purchased the cheapest item on her registry—a humble air fryer—she was incensed. She swiftly called her grandmother to express her dissatisfaction.

“Seriously, Grandma? I just received your gift. An air fryer? That’s the cheapest thing you could have chosen from my registry!” she exclaimed during the phone call.

Jen, keen on preserving the element of surprise surrounding her gift, assured her granddaughter that the forthcoming item would be incredibly practical.

“Practical? Seriously, Grandma? You’re not fooling anyone. We all know you’re well-off. I can’t believe you’d skimp out like this. It’s really disappointing,” Eloise retorted, her agitation apparent.

“You’re correct. We’re just a bunch of penny-pinchers, useless relics of the past. What you didn’t know is that we were planning to give you a $40,000 check the day before your wedding,” Jen revealed, but Eloise was too upset to hear her out.

“No, it’s obvious. You simply don’t care enough to make an effort. You know how stressed I am about the wedding, and then this? It’s like you’re indifferent to my feelings,” the young woman lamented before abruptly ending the call.

Jen and her husband deliberated, concluding that Eloise’s behavior and lack of gratitude disqualified her from receiving their financial support.

A span of days elapsed before Eloise reached out to her grandparents once more.

“Why is it that I’ve learned you’ve given money to everyone else upon their marriage, yet I received nothing?” she inquired.

“We made the decision based on your reaction to our wedding gift. It didn’t seem appropriate to proceed with gifting you the money,” Jen explained.

“Are you punishing me then? Because I expressed disappointment over an air fryer?” Eloise pressed.

“The air fryer wasn’t the issue, Eloise. It was the way you addressed us, the disrespect. That’s not something we can overlook or endorse,” Jen clarified.

“But it’s so unjust! I was under immense stress, Grandma. Planning a wedding is daunting, and I simply lost my composure. I didn’t intend any of it,” Eloise pleaded tearfully.

“We acknowledge the challenging circumstances, but it’s essential to recognize the repercussions of both actions and words,” expressed Eloise’s grandparents firmly.

“But you’re not seeing my perspective! Can’t we just move past this? I really need that financial support, Grandma,” Eloise persisted in her plea.

Despite Eloise’s threats to abstain from family gatherings, even during Christmas, her grandparents remained resolute in their decision.

“We care deeply for you. Our decision isn’t about severing ties but about encouraging reflection. We hope you’ll come to understand our reasoning,” they conveyed to their granddaughter.

Do you think the grandparents were too severe with Eloise?
