A tragic car accident on Saturday morning claimed the life of NFL prospect Khyree Jackson, just hours after he posted a somber message on social media.
Police reported that a speeding vehicle killed 24-year-old Jackson and two of his friends. Jackson had recently been drafted by the Minnesota Vikings.
Early Saturday morning, authorities confirmed that Jackson, a cornerback, and Hazel, the driver, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Hazel had been Jackson’s high school teammate.
Anthony Lytton Jr., another passenger and teammate, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries later.
On Friday, Jackson shared a 10-slide Instagram carousel featuring snapshots from his life, including moments from Vikings practice, accompanied by the caption “Mmmhmmm.”
The post also showcased Jackson smiling on a beach with two parrots, flexing with a lizard, and taking selfies in front of a mirror to highlight his stylish attire.
One image contrasted “dreamers” and “doers,” depicting a group labeled as “dreamers” watching a man, labeled as a “doer,” surfing a massive wave.
Jackson truly epitomized a “doer.”
TMZ reported that the football star began his college journey at Fort Scott Community College after graduating from Dr. Henry Wise Jr. High School. He advanced his career by playing for the Oregon Ducks and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
According to Oregon Live, Jackson’s standout season was in 2023, earning him recognition as the top cornerback for the Ducks.
At 24 years old, Jackson was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft.
“The news of Khyree Jackson’s death after an overnight car accident breaks our hearts,” the Vikings said in a statement.
“The Minnesota Vikings have spoken with Khyree’s family and offered their support as we look into the matter further.”
“We have also communicated the news to Vikings players, coaches, and staff, and have offered counseling for those in need of emotional support.”
“Our hearts go out to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone else affected by this tragic accident.”
Jackson had a “contagious energy” that inspired his fellow players.
“The news of this breaks my heart,” said O’Connell. “Khyree’s energy spread through our building and team.”
“His teammates were immediately drawn to him because of his confidence and great personality. During our time together, it was evident that Khyree was destined to become an exceptional professional football player. But what truly impressed me was his dedication to being the best person he could be for his family and those around him.”
I’m at a loss for words. My thoughts and prayers are with Khyree’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches during this difficult time.
Early Saturday morning around 3 a.m., Jackson was in a Dodge Charger with two former teammates when an Infiniti suddenly pulled out in front of them. According to the police, the collision caused the Charger to veer off the road, where it struck several tree stumps.
The police also report that the Infiniti collided with a Chevrolet Impala. Thankfully, Cori Clingman, the driver of the Impala, and her passengers, as well as the driver of the Infiniti, were not injured.
No charges have been filed yet as the investigation continues.
